Greetings!

  • Here's an excerpt from Barry Fey's "Backstage Past" book; we have Barry coming to the DPC for a Book Beat Luncheon this Thursday, Jan. 26.
  • "In February of 1969, I did a show with Iron Butterfly. I wasn't a fan. Compared to Cream and Janis and Zeppelin and Creedence, come on, Butterfly didn't have much talent. They got lucky, like Grand Funk Railroad was later; they sold a lot of records and a lot of tickets, but they didn't have much talent compared to the big acts. Their hit was 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" which was supposed to be "In the Garden of Eden'. But they were so stoned when they went into the studio, they slurred through it and it came out "innagaddadavida." It was a HUGE, HUGE hit. That night, after their show at the Auditorium Arena, some kids broke windows and vandalized stores in downtown Denver. That's when Denver politicians stuck their noses into my business."
  • Will you join us Thursday? See full details below under Jan. 26, and be sure to make your reservation by noon Wednesday, Jan. 25, at www.blacktie-colorado.com.

120504_Frank_DefordThe DPC presents the 18th annual Damon Runyon Award Banquet, to be held at the Denver Marriott City Center. We'll be honoring Frank Deford, one of America's top authors and sportswriters, well-known for his many years at Sports Illustrated, his NPR commentaries on "Morning Edition," appearances on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" and more.

His books have included the novel "Everybody's All-American" and "Alex: The Life of A Child," a memoir about his daughter, who died of cystic fibrosis. Both have been made into movies. Two of his original screenplays - "Trading Hearts" and "Four Minutes" - also have been filmed.

Deford has been elected to the Hall of Fame of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters. His peers have six times voted Deford the U.S. Sportswriter of The Year. Deford also has won the National Magazine Award for profiles, a Christopher Award, and journalism Honor Awards from the University of Missouri and Northeastern University, and he has received many honorary degrees. The Sporting News has described Deford as "the most influential sports voice among members of the print media," and GQ magazine has called him "the world's greatest sportswriter."

In broadcasting, Deford has won both an Emmy and a George Foster Peabody Award.

President's Welcome

We invite you to become part of something special -- a journalism tradition in Denver that stretches back to 1867. That's how long journalists have gathered at the Denver Press Club -- to socialize, gossip, swap ideas and stories.

We’re happy to tell you that the club has been thriving the past few years -– booking more events than ever, possessing a bank balance that ranges from the high five figures to low six figures, a diligent board of directors and staff watching every penny going in and out, and building its membership to more than 430 people (including active and retired media, and professionals from many fields, including public relations, marketing, advertising, online ventures, health care, education, government, law, lobbyists, student journalists, and others). Anyone who shares an interest in communications, literacy, current affairs or the First Amendment is welcome.

We’re serving a buffet dinner Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights. Or stop by for drinks with friends at the bar. Come to our events, which are among the most stimulating in the Denver metro area. Take a look at the replicas of all the Pulitzer Prizes won by The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News. Play a game of pool in the lower level.

And if you need an inexpensive joint to rent for an event, we’ve got it – and one of the most unique atmospheres you’ll find in Denver. Talk to club manager Carmen Green (303-571-5260) about your event. And yes, we can cook the food for it as well.

The DPC is one of the most distinctive private clubs in America. For more than a century, it's played host to poets and presidents, writers and visiting journalists. Ginger Rogers learned to play poker here. Carl Sandburg stopped in for dinner. Damon Runyon drank here. Woodrow Wilson paid a call.

The club hosts book signings that feature both local and national authors of renown, newsmaker luncheons, and talks by local editors and reporters. We encourage the best of student journalism with annual scholarships that total $7,000. Members enjoy reciprocal privileges at 22 other press clubs across the nation.

We hope that as you peruse this web site, you'll find a reason to join us.

Thanks

Manager's Welcome

I returned as manager of the Denver Press Club in February 2007. We’ve been able to accomplish many things since then.

The club is now a premier venue for such events as weddings, reunions, business meetings or networking at a very reasonable room rate, with in-house catering and full bar service. The club can accommodate up to 230 people using the whole building. Or, it can be separated on different floors for smaller groups. The service staff consists of very friendly, alert and accommodating professional people with years of experience in this business.

To say the least, returning to the club has been a very gratifying experience. With what we have managed to accomplish in a short time, I believe that the Denver Press Club is now on the right business track and will continue to be a part of Denver's history for a very long time.

Please feel free to give me a call with any questions, or if I can be of assistance with your next event.

Thank you,

Carmen Green
